The Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service , Haliru Nababa, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a private biotechnology firm for the production of organic fertilisers at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Controller General of Corrections noted that the partnership would convert waste to wealth, as well as raise the value chain on the development of biogas at the custodial centre. Nababa, who was represented by the Controller of Corrections, in charge of the Sewage Unit, Raymond Jatau, stated that there would be continuous selection and deployment of inmates for learning and earning from the programme.
He added that the project would encourage PPP as a government strategic development policy, thereby generating revenue from waste, as well as ensuring the sustainability of biogas as a viable option for sewage and waste management in a correctional environment.
