Washington fell, 9-1, as its young shortstop went 0 for 3.
The Nationals' Jesse Winker is tagged out by Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor while attempting to steal second base in the fifth inning Wednesday at Nationals Park. Maybe this was the swing that would get shortstop CJ Abrams back on track. It certainly looked that way when the Washington Nationals shortstop connected with a sinker from Luis Severino during the third inning of Wednesday’s matchup with the New York Mets., sending the Mets’ Harrison Bader toward the wall.
His at-bat didn’t make or break the Nationals’ 9-1 loss to the Mets, who swept the three-game series. But Abrams, who finished 0 for 3, didn’t get the result he probably should have. The ball had an exit velocity of 103.3 mph and traveled 402 feet, but that wasn’t enough.. He was the Nationals’ most consistent hitter, spearheading an offense that was at its best when the 23-year-old shortstop was at his. As the month ended, Abrams was hittingand had slugged a team-leading seven home runs.
Abrams saw fastballs and sinkers 43.4 percent of the time in April. In May, that dropped to 36.6 percent. Martinez said he believes Abrams started looking for off-speed pitches, which made him late on fastballs. He hit .205 with a .519 OPS in May and closed the month dealing with a shoulder injury. As the series with the Mets ends, he’s hitting .246 with nine home runs and a .739 OPS on the season. He declined to speak with reporters after the game.
