'In some areas, I will say he did well and in some other areas, there is a need for improvement. For example, we are all aware that he prioritised security as part of the agenda during his campaign.'

Oil theft is one of the challenges that have affected the Buhari administration and the circumstances of this theft are so diverse. It is a multi-trillion naira industry with different players. To solve the issue, I think the incoming government has to first and foremost identify the market. The purpose of the theft is to sell, so if you identify the market and take measures to block the market, then you would reduce the tendency for anyone to steal.

How would you describe the role of national unity in having a secured Nigeria and what should the incoming government do? A cohesion index shows that every year that Buhari was President, the index of unity in the country was below the global standard of around 40 per cent while the recommended standard is 60 per cent. Clearly, that has provided the incentive for insecurity in the country because it is the lack of national unity and cohesion that allow grievances to thrive, and once those grievances are there, then the threat elements will be recruited from those that are aggrieved.

There were a series of protests against the Federal Government and there was #EndSARS, which was the youths’ opposition to police brutality, what should the incoming administration do to avert a similar situation? It’s security sector reforms. The Buhari administration introduced the revised national security strategy with the idea that they will change the philosophy of security from a state-centric approach to a citizen-centered approach. Sadly, that has not been implemented. I think the best thing is for the incoming administration to implement that. Implement it so that the average Nigerian sees security as working for them.
