The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has rated Yobe State as the state with the highest number of Libya returnees in North-East.The Director General of the Agency Fatima Waziri-Azi disclosed this at the inauguration of the Yobe Taskforce on the Prohibition of Human Trafficking at Damaturu the state capital in partnership with International Organisations for Migration.
“The dominant type of human trafficking in Yobe State is labour exploitation with few cases of sex trafficking. More disturbingly, Yobe state has the highest figure of Libya returnees in the Northeast geo-political zone,” he added. “Since NAPTIP commenced operation in Yobe state in 2018, we have achieved significant milestones, this is why NAPTIP is collaborating with state governments to establish a task force on human trafficking under the supervision of state governors,” she said.Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State who was represented by the Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney General of the state Barrister Saleh Samanja pledged to support the NAPTIP to succeed in mitigating the challenge of human trafficking.
She directed all traditional rulers and local government caretaker chairmen to ensure they report all suspicious activities in their locality. In her response, the Senior Emergency Coordinator, International Organisation for Migration Mutasim Hamdan explained they will ensure they give maximum support to both the federal and state governments to curtail the increasing number of human trafficking in Nigeria.
