Provincial funding will help pay for accessible bleacher seating, parking lot improvements, lighting and a media and coaching booth in the city’s stadium district

The province is contributing $1 million to help pay for accessible bleacher seating at Nanaimo’s Q’unq’inuqwstuxw Stadium, and parking lot improvements, lighting and a media and coaching booth in the city’s stadium district.

The district consists of the Serauxmen baseball stadium, the multi-purpose sports stadium , Rotary Bowl track and field stadium, and is near the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and the Nanaimo Ice Center, a plaza and common area. This money is critical for tourism in the community, said Ian Simpson, chair of Tourism Nanaimo.

The city is investing $12.2 million in the district and has spent close to $7 million between 2019 and 2022 to upgrade the stadiums. Improvements in the stadium district so far include resurfacing the track at the Rotary stadium, fencing, outfield lighting, bleacher repairs, new score clock and First Nations art installation.“The stadium district will be a great economic boost to our community and enhance event quality for our citizens and visitors alike,” Mayor Leonard Krog said.>>> To comment on this article, write a letter to the editor: letters@timescolonist.
