N.J. native Dariq Whitehead anxious to help rebuilding Nets after slew of injuries
But the Newark, N.J. native hasn’t been healthy for several years due to a variety of injuries. His Duke career was cut short by a right foot injury thatand he only played two games with the Nets last season before undergoing surgery for shin splints in his left leg in January.
“No, I put in too much work for it,” he said. “I left home when I was 12 years old, 13 years old to go chase this dream , so I knew no matter what it was I was going to continue to fight and get back to where I needed to be.” Whitehead played four games in the NBA G League last season, averaging 8.3 points and 2.8 rebounds, but said he felt the shin splints pain “when I first got to the G.”
Whitehead said he has bonded with the new staff, especially assistant coach Juwan Howard, the former Michigan “Fab Five” member and head coach. “He’s not going to sit there and give you the most compliments, but he’s going to be hard with you,” Whitehead said. “And if you know Kevin Boyle, Kevin Boyle’s the same way. He’s not going to give you a lot of compliments, he’s going to be hard on you and eventually that got me to where I was in high school so having a coach like Steve Hetzel, for him to just be able to push me and be hard on me and get me to where I need to be, I feel like those are the type of coaches I respond well to.
