‘My only regret at 84’
is enjoying the fruits of her labour today. A mother of eight children and many grandchildren, she could be found today at her country home at Ifira Akoko, Ondo State, and the next moment, she is either in Abuja, United Kingdom or any other place her children wants her to be, since they are highly placed in the society. A former textile dealer and merchant, Monisola Ajulo goes down memory lane as she clocks 84, in this interview with PAUL UKPABIO. Excerpts:Thank you.
I love shoes to match with clothing or to match with my general outlook. I like to combine colours and I can’t do without women shawl .Yes, I dance but not all the time, just when there’s a need to. I love going to movies, Ogunde films are my favorites. I play ludo and traditional board game . And I still do till date.Hmmm, one of my early life memories is that of the period after the death of my father, when my uncle took me to Sapele under the guise of furthering my education.
I was able to cope because textile business then was mostly for women. We used to travel to neighboring countries to source for cloths, then with my husband as a salaried bookseller, I noticed the potentials and profits in the business as an entrepreneur and I ventured into it. And I was not deterred by the men or by the foreigners.I had no challenges at the initial stage but as time went on, I started having issues with the Customsand Excise Department.
The stress of travelling to do my textile business and the corruption tendencies of the officials were weighing me down and I needed more time with my children. That was why I started the bookshop and of course, because of my love for education. Sooner too, the bookshop became more rewarding.I’m very grateful to God for my life; my children and grandchildren and I can’t wait to be a great grand ma. I pray for all my children for them to do good.
