Everything worked out as planned for members of a kidnap gang operating in Rivers State until they were to collect a ransom in the Umuechem area of the state when police arrested them.
One of the gang members, Mohammed Adamu, was arrested and the victim, identified simply as Kingsley freed.learnt that Kingsley and his wife had gone to a poultry farm in Igwuruta , a neigbouring community, on June 12 to buy crates of eggs.
Our correspondent gathered that the woman reported the case to a police station in the area and operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team in the state were involved in the rescue mission. “When the kidnappers contacted her, they requested that she should go to Umuechem pipeline area and drop the ransom. Many people were moving around the area but detectives were able to confirm that two men dressed like farmers were the ones waiting to collect the ransom from the woman.
He said he had participated in three successful operations with the gang before luck ran out on them on June 15. “We took him into the bush and later contacted his wife on the third day. We kept negotiating with her for days and she said she was able to raise N550,000 out of the N2m that we finally agreed to collect. Musa and I were asked to collect the ransom from her at an agreed spot. As soon as I collected the money, someone grabbed me and Musa ran away.”
Recounting his ordeal, Kingsley said the kidnappers moved him around the forest for two days without feeding him.
