The federal election may not be for another week, but more than 2 million people have already cast a ballot, and one expert forecasts a record one in two Australians will vote early this election.
“Pre-poll voting is on track to be similar to last time, and postal voting is on track to go up by quite a bit, so yes, we will probably exceed [the 2019 election],” Mr Raue said. The change has done little to dampen enthusiasm for early in-person voting, with pre-poll voting averaging about 318,000 people a day this week.“We see it in state elections, we’ve seen it in New Zealand [and] we see it in US elections that people like the convenience, and when the option is opened up to them, people seem to be taking it in larger numbers,” he said.
Mr Raue said the effect of early voting on the dynamics of the election campaign was not as significant as it may seem.
