“Refugees reported fleeing violence and some even arrived across the border with gunshot wounds.”
The latest arrivals are crossing the border into Taraba and Cross Rivers states in eastern and southern Nigeria, bringing the number of refugees to almost 60,000, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said in a statement.
In October 2017, an armed revolt erupted in Cameroon’s English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions bordering Nigeria, where insurgents want to break with the French-speaking bulk of the country. Refugees in Nigeria are “being sheltered in public schools and health facilities or with local families”, the UNHCR said.
