Premier Daniel Andrews has pledged to unveil a “modest easing” of restrictions on Wednesday for when tolerable case thresholds are reached, recognising that “some of these rules can’t be on forever”.
Victoria has recorded 76 new local coronavirus cases on Tuesday as authorities pledged a roadmap of “modest easing” to be revealed on Wednesday.
“We have to aim to keep these numbers incredibly low. If we can achieve zero, that’s a terrific outcome. If we can’t, then we are all the better for having tried to drive the numbers down as low as possible, because this is the key point: Delta infects so rapidly that it’s not a choice between zero or 500 cases a day. It’s a choice between very low numbers of cases, and thousands of cases. It’s hard to find an in between, no country in the world has been able to do that.
But Mr Andrews said there were a number of motivating factors that should encourage people to choose vaccinations and vaccine passports had already been briefly mentioned in national cabinet. “If it works, then you’re obviously better for it, and logic tells you that they will - those types of approaches,” Mr Andrews said during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update. “Whether it’s pop-ups … [or] faith-based ... trusted [environments] ... they’ll be targeted in the communities where the vaccination rates are lower to try and get those numbers up.”
The cases were reported from nearly 50,850 COVID-19 tests. No cases were recorded in the state’s hotel quarantine.on Monday he was not sure whether Victoria could achieve zero COVID-19 cases in the short term “That necessarily impacts on our ability to care for other patients - that includes patients who might need major elective heart surgery for example, or major semi-elective cancer surgery,” Dr Warrilow said.COVID-19 exposure site list expandsLoading
