Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq yesterday inaugurated the Humanitarian Policy Dialogue Forum in Abuja. Nigeria

The forum will provide a platform for policy dialogue between the Minister, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Edward Kallon and key stakeholders in the development and humanitarian sectors in Nigeria. Farouq said the Humanitarian Policy Dialogue Forum would provide an opportunity for the humanitarian and development stakeholders in Nigeria to review their activities vis a- vis existing policies.

HPDF among other things is expected to sensitise stakeholders on the current activities and plans of the Ministry. At the end of the workshop, the participants unanimously approved a communiqué. According to her, one of her key priorities is to kick start the process for early recovery, which will include sustainable homegrown models for rehabilitation, recovery and reconstruction.

County representative of the United Nations women and the Economic Community of West African States in Nigeria, Comfort Lamptey has called on the media to collaborate with the UN agency to positively promote its activities and tell the progress and challenges of women even as the world marks the International Women’s Day throughout this month.

Speaking to a cross section of journalist at an interactive media session in Abuja, Lamptey described the media as one of the strongest tools in creating change in perceptions especially as the agency seeks to leverage on the generation equality to foster interaction between the young and older generation of women in advancing women’s rights.

UN Women program analyst, women, peace and security, Elise Dietrichson said the twelve critical areas of the Beijing platform are key to ensuring gender equality in Nigeria especially as women make up a large number of the population.
