As conflict creeps closer to reality in the Pacific, Sen. Dan Sullivan says it's time to reopen Adak as a naval base.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - From incursions near Alaska to conflict with treaty allies, tensions in the Pacific are a cause for concern according to Alaska’s junior senator, Dan Sullivan. That’s why he thinks investments in Alaska’s military infrastructure should continue by reopening a base on Adak Island.
Strategically located with a front seat to Pacific conflicts, access to allies and important resources, Alaska is positioned to be a first line of defense for the nation and an important transfer point if our allies in the Pacific were to go to war. One thing that makes him hopeful about Alaska’s defense capabilities is the recently acquired ice breaker that will be based in Juneau and the deep sea port being built in Nome. This port could be used to house naval vessels and ice breakers with access to the Bering sea.
Adak is located near the center of the Aleutian Islands, west of Nikolai. This places southcentral to the Bering Sea which has seen increased Naval activity from both Russia and China.China in particular being of concern due to their naval activity in the South China Sea which is causing conflict with the Philippines, a treaty ally of the U.S.
