Meralco announces a rate hike of ₱0.1853 per kilowatt-hour (kWH) for the month of May, which could result in a typical household consuming 200 kWh per month to be charged around ₱37 more in its total bill.
Customers of Meralco may expect higher electric bills this month as the power distributor announced a rate hike for this May.
In a statement, the power distributor said its overall rate shall go up by ₱0.1853 per kilowatt-hour during the month to ₱8.5920 per kWh. This means a typical household consuming 200 kWh a month may expect to be charged around ₱37 more in its total bill. The recent hike is a “result of the completion of the refund of over-recovery in pass-through charges,” it said. Meralco has already finished the process as approved by the, which ordered the firm to refund over-recoveries in transmission and other charges.
“MERALCO implemented the ERC-approved adjustments starting January 2021 and completed the refund of over-recoveries last April. The impact to residential customers, from the months of January to April 2021, was a refund of around P0.15 per kWh,” it said. The company also saw its generation charge slightly move up by ₱0.0104 per kWh in May to ₱4.5374. Charges from Power Supply Agreements also remained high, said Meralco, saying “tight supply conditions in the Luzon grid as capacity on outage stayed above 3,300 MW and Luzon peak demand in April still exceeded 10,400 MW.”
