Overtime, the Nigerian military has come under constant criticism from both the media and civil society organisations as it strives to protect the country’s territorial integrity. As part of sustained efforts to defend the nation, the Nigerian Armed Forces frequently come into friction with the populace and even journalists working to inform the citizens of happenings around the country.
Ali explained that the main goal of military activities was no longer exclusively the defeat of an adversary but the creation of a safe environment for comprehensive and inclusive post- political conflicts and social order. “Armed conflict situations or theatres of war often present fertile ground for friction between the military and the media”, he noted.
Participants at the workshop also advocated regular cooperative engagement to address the friction in the existing military-media relationship. “Security issues should not be seen as the sole responsibility of the military, but a collective responsibility of all.”
