Retired Essendon forward Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti faces a long path back to the AFL after Fremantle had discussions with the 29-year-old who is contemplating a return to the game.announcing his retirement ahead of the Dreamtime at the ’G game in May.

Industry sources confirmed he met informally with a key Dockers official while in Perth recently where a potential return to the game was discussed. The prospect of him playing for Fremantle raised on AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday.

The AFL would have to make a ruling on the issue but is open to facilitating a return within the existing rules.
