The road to perdition is paved with the reputational embers of public figures who believed they could manipulate the media to their own ends. And to that wretched litany, which includes, of most recent notoriety, Prince Andrew, we can now add the former Health Secretary,Hancock, a man of colossal self-regard, will doubtless bristle at a comparison to the shamed Royal.
How wrong he was. And the fact that he has been prepared to take quite substantial risks in order to keep himself in the public eye, certain that understanding and sympathy, if not absolution, was just around the corner, shows us just how desperate he is, and how bad is his judgement.
You’d think that a person with that CV might be tempted to disappear into obscurity, to return to his plough like Cincinnatus . But that is not the way of things in modern politics. Infamy is a route to riches. Obloquy has become a meal ticket. Stay visible, and you, too, can earn millions from speaking engagements.
