NAFDAC uncovers a large-scale operation dealing in expired and falsified drugs near Ariaria International Market, leading to several arrests.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control ( NAFDAC ) announced on Friday, February 14, 2025, that its operatives had uncovered a massive depot for large-scale dealings in expired and falsified drugs located in Umumeje village in Osisioma Ngwa, Abia state. This depot, situated near the bustling Ariaria International Market, comprised multiple buildings and operated as a hub for repackaging and revalidating expired medicines for resale.

During a raid conducted in collaboration with security agencies, NAFDAC seized a significant quantity of expired pharmaceuticals, including potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments. The agency also discovered machines used to rebrand and alter expiry dates on the premises. While the operation resulted in the arrest of several individuals, the prime suspect remains at large. Despite efforts to reach him, he has shown no concern for his detained family members. This discovery is part of the federal government's intensified crackdown on counterfeit medicines and reflects NAFDAC's unwavering commitment to eradicating the circulation of substandard and falsified drugs in Nigeria. The agency is currently evaluating its existing laws to propose stricter penalties for individuals and organizations involved in the production and distribution of dangerous pharmaceutical products.
