Lawyers for Donald Trump’s former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows asked a federal judge in Georgia to block state authorities from arresting the ex-aide if he fails to voluntarily surrender by Aug. 25 on charges that he conspired to help overturn the 2020 election.
The emergency request for an order against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was filed Tuesday in federal court in Atlanta. Meadows argues he should not be required to surrender for booking in the state case while he fights to have the matter moved to federal court and dismissed.
Meadows wants to avoid surrendering before an Aug. 28 hearing in federal court on his request to move the case out of state court. He argues he’s protected from state prosecution under the US Constitution because he was an employee of the federal government during the alleged misconduct.
