March 28: Gunning for change. Plus other letters to the editor GlobeDebate

: In Canada, there is no right to bear arms. Although there are reasonable arguments to justify the possession of some traditional hunting and target weapons, there is no argument which justifies the private ownership of handguns or weapons of war.F.R. Shuttleworth, Haliburton, Ont.Elizabeth Renzetti rightly identifies a gun ban as a safety issue for minorities, for abused or threatened women and for anyone who believes in the sanctity and safety of our public spaces.

The detractors deserve no such benefit. The website of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights, which organized the mass campaign of complaints, broadcasts a video which attributes Dr. Ahmed’s advocacy for gun control to her “traumatic experience” trying to save and help the shooting victims. It appears that the coalition has added psychoanalysis to its purported repertoire of expertise............................................

After Christchurch there is only one response that makes sense. New Zealanders get it. But the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights doesn’t. The CCFR attack against Dr. Najma Ahmed was dismissed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons as frivolous and vexatious.
