For the Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews scored twice, the second on a lovely backhand over sprawling goalie Linus Ullmark, and Frédérik Gauthier scored for the second time in as many games. The fourth-line centre, scratched from the lineup recently due to lacklustre play, got his first goal since Oct. 7 on Saturday in a defeat of the Oilers in Edmonton.
In two previous meetings with the Maple Leafs this month, Eichel had two goals and one assist. In his career, Eichel has scored more goals against Toronto than any other team. He has 22 points against them in 16 career games. The Maple Leafs won three of four games last week on a road trip that began with a victory over the Stanley Cup-champion St. Louis Blues and included wins over the Canucks and Edmonton.“That wasn’t an easy road trip,” Matthews said earlier. “We played some good teams in big environments. Frederik Andersen had 36 saves in the victory over the Oilers in Edmonton on Saturday and was back in the net for the eighth straight game. He entered the night tied for most wins in the league with Washington’s Braden Holtby, Jordan Binnington of St. Louis and Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck.
