AUGUST 19, 2023 will be President Manuel L. Quezon's 145th birth anniversary. Quezon is an important figure in Philippine history. However, I loathe how history and historical figures like Quezon are often reduced to 'did you know' bits of trivia by antiquarians and by the insecurities of those in constant need of affirmation in the form of 'I know something most people do not.'History is not about trivial information about the past.
This was the dilemma of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, for instance. She was a brilliant freedom fighter who turned out to be a disappointing steward of the state. The same might also be said for Emilio Aguinaldo or to a lesser extent, Corazon Aquino.Quezon was by no means a saint. He manifested authoritarian tendencies.
