Following a tragic robbery incident that robbed him of his sight three years ago, Tomi Waziri was thrown into pitch darkness and became stuck in a rock bottom life situation. However, from the jades life threw at him, arose an inspiring, intriguing story of self discovery, which he shared with TESSY IGOMU
He presently runs a Non-governmental Organisation, Tomiwaziri Foundation, which gives hope to the visually impaired, the less privileged and those in depressive state.On September 12, 2019, at the age of 27, Tomi was robbed of one of his most prized possessions – the gift of sight. However, on that ill-fated day, while conveying a female passenger from to the Papa Ajao area of Mushin around 8pm., he was attacked and shot by the criminals and left bleeding profusely.
Despite undergoing several medical interventions and treatment regimen to salvage his damaged optic nerve, Waziri lost his vision. He also lost the will to live and slid into depression. “I overcame depression because I chose positivity and realised that staying down was not the best option for me. I eventually became a counsellor and am on a journey of making a million and more smiles,” he said while speaking with our correspondent at his Ikorodu residence.
“I know what it is to be a disabled person now, because I was sighted for 27 years of my life. I have seen both worlds and I must say that it is not easy. I don’t want my blindness to be in vain, which is why I decided to turn it into a message of hope.”Aside from running the foundation, the visually impaired Waziri revealed that a book will debut soon that will detail his journey from “sight to sound’, noting that it is aimed at changing the narrative about those living with disability.
