Michael Peterec, 36, has been charged with dangerous driving and is set to appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on Dec. 13. While there was no collision, an Alberta RCMP traffic forensic collision reconstructionist was consulted and provided a detailed report for use in court. The Cochrane RCMP published a photo showing the radar gun after clocking Peterec driving 270 km/h on Highway 1.The report found when travelling the speed limit of 110 km/h, once brakes are applied, a vehicle will need 55.96 metres to come to a complete stop. When a vehicle is travelling at 270 km/h, a vehicle will need 337.29 metres to come to a complete stop. The vehicle would have required an additional 281.33 metres to come to a stop — equivalent to the length of two Canadian football fields.
“There is no excuse for excessive speeding on our streets and highways. Travelling at rates beyond the posted limit puts you, and those you are sharing the road with, at risk,” said Insp. Chris Romanchych with Alberta RCMP Traffic.
