Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company has petitioned the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, challenging a recent tariff reduction order and demanding its immediate suspension.

Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company has filed a formal petition before the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, EERC , challenging a recent tariff reduction order. The petition, dated August 14, 2025, stems from the EERC 's order, effective August 1, 2025, which reduced tariff for Band A customers to N160.40/kWh from N209/kWh, while freezing tariffs for Bands B-C.

This decision was met with widespread criticism from the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Generation Companies (Gencos), other Distribution Companies (Discos), and the Federal Ministry of Power. Stakeholders argued that the tariff reduction was unsustainable and urged the EERC to reconsider. \Mainpower, through a four-paragraph affidavit signed by Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, Managing Director/CEO, seeks an immediate suspension of the tariff order until its petition is heard and determined. The company argues that the order does not comply with the requirements of the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (Regulation No. EERC-R-001 : Business Rules) Regulation, 2024, and the Methodology for Tariff Regulation, 2024. \ Mainpower states that the tariff order was published without their agreement and a formal cost review process as stipulated in the regulations. They participated in a three-day engagement meeting with the EERC to discuss tariff parameters, but an agreement could not be reached on key factors with significant impact. Despite attempts to resolve issues and schedule a further meeting, Mainpower claims the EERC proceeded to finalize and publish the tariff order without a consensus. The company expresses concerns that this unilateral action jeopardizes the Vesting Contract arrangement between their holding company, Enugu Electricity Distribution Plc (EEDC), and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), which supplies electricity to Mainpower.
