KEEPING pets in dirty spaces, small cages, short leashes and leaving them under the sun and rain.
“Those are common mistakes made by pet owners due to lack of proper knowledge and education on taking care of their pets,” says Malaysia Animal Association president Arie Dwi Andika.
“There are awareness campaigns in urban areas like shopping malls. But it’s most likely that pet owners in such areas are already well educated. Lee, who owns five dogs, says it was sad to know of pets being dumped by owners at remote locations or at the doorstep of animal shelters. “But after they get bored or when the animal gets older, the pet’s daily needs are neglected. Sometimes, owners also give up when they see the bill for the veterinarian.Lee concurs it is time for more education to be promoted among pet owners so that they are aware of their responsibilities.
