We were preparing for the last Ileya celebration when some gunmen besieged our house and started shooting. They kidnapped me alongside my two brothers. They took us to where they stay in the creeks.

We were fed with what I can call ‘feselu’ in Ijebu. It is a mixture of water and poorly cooked garri.’’

According to the Liken of Iwopin, a traditional ruler in one of the communities in the local government, Oba Sunday Adeniyi, Ogun Waterside shares a border with Epe, Ibeju-Lekki which is five minutes’ drive to Dangote refinery in Lagos State. Residents who spoke with our correspondent claimed that most of the kidnappings that took place in the area were allegedly perpetrated by people from the Niger Delta region otherwise called “Ijaw Boys”.

He complained that the hoodlums had successfully lured some young men in the area to serve as informants. “These kidnappers make use of police speed boats in Ode-Omi. They also carried individual boats found on the water.” The monarch added, “When they came, they went inside their target’s house. In fact, recently there was a rumour that they went away with almost N4m. When the people in the community started shouting thief, they shot sporadically killing four people that day.

He said, “Imagine the audacity, after collecting ransom from the man, the kidnappers returned to abduct his wife. We are really facing a lot in this area. He added that Ibiade, which is the headquarters of the local government, had become a haven for the kidnappers. On his part, Oba Adeniyi said the town was short of security personnel, adding that they had only eight security officers in the large community.

Oba Adeniyi said the alarming rate of the situation prompted him to join a local security outfit after he inaugurated it. He said, “When I inaugurated the vigilance group, we educated the members. We did that to prevent any situation where some of them would be tempted to work against the community.” The monarch said the initial presence of the factory gainfully engaged youths in the area, lamenting that after it folded up, the youth became idle.Oba Raimi observed that the guns used by the local guards could not match the kidnappers’.

Efforts to know if his family paid a ransom or not before his aged mother was released were futile as he declined to make any comments on the issue.Abudu-Balogun stated that the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, launched the State Security Trust Fund to tackle insecurity in many parts of the state. He said, “Deployment was made to the town and the kidnappers felt the heat was on them, so, they fled through Lagos and carried the vital items they needed like weapons, gas cylinders and engine boat. They were preparing to escape when mobile policemen at Ode-Omi arrested them.

A family source told our correspondent that the kidnappers collected the items and N3.5m from them before they released their loved ones to them. “A day before the Ileya at Ogun Waterside, Ode-Omi to be precise, where there are creeks, these boys once again abducted three young men who came from Lagos to visit their families. It was another challenge for us. For three days. we were in that area and by the special grace of God and the insistence of the command, the victims were rescued.

Jamiu who is from Kwara State insisted that he didn’t know that one of the people on the bus was in possession of gun until the police arrested them. He said, “They have created creeks beside the river. That creek is their hideout. Immediately they perpetrated their evil work, they normally pass through areas like Agric and the bush. They have a heavy boat they use to paddle to the other side. Recently, they snatched boats belonging to the forestry, the marine police and one other boat.’’
