Likely knowing the house would be unoccupied that night, as has been the case with a number of targeted footballer break-ins over the last few years, thieves stole items of jewellery and an Audi RS6. The car was later found in the Wigan area but Merseyside Police are appealing for information.

His wife and children were at home at the time and were threatened at knifepoint by the burglar, who was later sentenced to seven years in prison.
