A Nigerian medical expert advises women on lifestyle changes to delay the onset of early menopause.
A Consultant Family Physician, Moses Mafowosofo, has advised women to adopt lifestyle modifications to help prevent the onset of early menopause . Mr. Mafowosofo, Co-Founder of M2 Specialist Hospital, gave this advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos State. Menopause, he explained, is a natural stage in a woman's life when menstrual periods cease permanently, marking the end of their reproductive years.
\It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, characterized by a 12-month absence of menstruation. During menopause, the ovaries gradually stop producing eggs, leading to a decline in essential hormones that regulate the reproductive system. Mr. Mafowosofo highlighted that while the exact causes of early menopause remain unclear in many cases, heredity and radiation exposure, particularly pelvic radiation, can contribute to its onset. \He emphasized that lifestyle modifications, which encompass regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can significantly aid in delaying or preventing early menopause. He further recommended that women who choose to drink alcohol should increase their physical activity levels. While medications like estrogen cream, antidepressants, and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can be used to manage symptoms and hormonal imbalances associated with menopause, Mr. Mafowosofo stressed the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle as a primary approach to mitigate the risks and effects of early menopause
