Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe has withdrawn her explosive sexual assault claim made against Liberal Senator David Van.
Ms Thorpe used the protection of parliamentary privilege to accuse Mr Van of assault on Wednesday before withdrawing the comments to “comply with Senate rules”.
The Liberal Senator described the accusation as “outrageous” and “malicious” in a statement released to the media. Despite withdrawing her comments, Senator Thorpe told the Senate she plans to make another statement on the matter on Thursday.
