As Nigerians continue to advocate for the introduction of a part-time legislature, Dr Elvis Ukpaka, a leadership and youth development expert tells SODIQ OJUROUNGBE that the country requires lawmakers who are completely on the ground to address high-level issues that arise daily, among others

Let me begin by saying that the foundation of Nigeria’s problems is rooted in her flawed political and economic system. The system was created by certain cabals during the military regime and passed down to successive governments. This system of governance obliterated the regional system of government we had before the civil war.

There is nothing wrong with federalism but the way we are operating it is the problem. The basic tenet of true federalism is that states or regions are to be economically buoyant, autonomous in operation, and self-sustaining while at the same time contributing a fair share for the maintenance of the government, which is at the centre.

This is a classical failure of leadership. Do we know what this terrible approach has done to the nation and Nigerians? It’s what I called a stilt: it has stilted creativity and innovation, and it has promoted laziness and increased dependence on the government at the centre. That’s what it has done.True federalism is achievable in Nigeria if we have the right leaders who will do the right thing. And to do that, we have to go back to the basics because our constitution has been shaken.
