A member representing Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency of Niger State, Hon Saidu Musa Abdullahi has announced his intention to establish a federal medical university in Niger State, being the first of its kind in the country, to increase access to health care.
He lamented the current statistics from the Medical and Dental Council which showed a lot of gap in terms of doctor-patient ratio as established by the World Health Organisation protocol. “Of course, in other sectors, we have specialised universities in agriculture, technology, education, petroleum, transport and aviation but the health sector has not been accorded that deserved attention”.
With an estimated population of about 200 million, we have about 50,000 doctors practicing in Nigeria, that gives you a huge gap in terms of doctor-patients ratio. These are some of the things that inform our decision to come with the proposal”.
