The Lagos State Government has said it has embarked on a strategy to curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance in food-producing animals in collaboration with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
The Media and Public Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Jide Lawal, in a statement on Sunday said the President of VCN, Dr Aishatu Baju, promised that the partnership would ensure that wholesome and hygienic meat was produced for consumption. The statement quoted Baju as saying, “This partnership will focus on ways to curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance in food-producing animals by completely restricting the use of antibiotics for growth promotion and disease prevention. By this, we will ensure that only wholesome and hygienic meat is produced for consumption.”
Baju said the Lagos Five-Year Agricultural Transformation Strategy necessitated the partnership as the state had the highest number of private veterinary services which required proper regulations.
