The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) is set to demolish illegal buildings and shanties in Otu-Mara, citing security threats and building distress. The agency is cracking down on illegal constructions and urging occupants to comply with the demolition order.
The Lagos State Building Control Agency ( LASBCA ) has announced plans to demolish illegally developed buildings and shanties in Otu-Mara, a community in the Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State. According to the agency's General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, notices were served to occupants of the affected structures before they were marked for demolition.
Oki stated that the demolition is necessary because these illegal structures are used as hideouts for criminals engaging in illicit activities, posing a significant security threat to the area and surrounding communities. He also emphasized that many of these structures are distressed, putting lives and property at risk. Oki urged occupants to comply with the demolition order within the given timeframe, warning that failure to do so would result in the enforcement of building regulations. He further warned building owners and developers against illegal construction practices, stating that the state government is committed to cracking down on non-compliance to restore order to the built environment.Lagos, with an estimated population of 21 million, faces a housing deficit of 17 million, according to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's 2023 assessment. This shortage has driven up housing costs, making decent shelter unaffordable for many low-income residents, including rural migrants. Despite the Lagos state government's efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal structures, they continue to exist, hindering the state's aspirations to become a mega city. LASBCA's commitment to enforcing building codes and regulations is crucial for ensuring the safety, legality, and sustainable development of Lagos. The agency's efforts to remove these illegal structures and promote responsible construction practices are essential for creating a more secure and livable environment for all Lagosians
