The governments of Lagos and Ogun have launched a media campaign to end open defecation along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency have launched a media campaign to end open defecation along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.on Wednesday, Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos state commissioner for environment and water resources, said the initiative is to prevent the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases.

Wahab said the campaign aims to restore the “aesthetic appeal of the vital corror”, targeting the median from OPIC plaza to Otedola bridge.Babatunde Ajayi, general manager of LASEPA, said that educating the public about the severe health hazards of open defecation is crucial, especially during the rainy season.

“We will work with local governments, Environmental Health Officers, market women, and law enforcement agencies to police this environment and report any infractions for legal action,” he said. Speaking further, Oluwadare Kehinde, general manager of OGEPA, lauded LASEPA’s initiative, emphasising the importance of cross-state cooperation in tackling environmental issues.“This initiative sets a strong precedent for how we can work together to tackle common issues,” Kehinde said.

Kehinde added that Ogun state is partnering with some global companies to build additional public restrooms to eradicate the practice of open defecation.
