Lagos State Government, yesterday, said it had concluded plans to educate over 50,000 illiterate adults yearly.
Director, Lagos State Agency for Mass Education, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kalesanwo, disclosed this at the opening ceremony of a four-day conference with the theme, “Innovative Strategies to Expanding Facilitators Access to Effective Teaching, Skills Development, Improved Enrolment and Retention of Adult Learners,” for adult educators.
Kalesanwo said as part of efforts to ensure that more Lagos residents could at least read and write, about 1,000 literacy centres had been established in various parts of the state. According to her, a follow-up to the literacy centres in the conference, which aims to identify the challenges to increasing enrolment and retention of adult learners in the centre, with over 2,000 adult education facilitators as participants.She said for each day of the four-day conference, at least 600 participants would learn about innovative teaching strategies.
Kalesanwo said the conference would be working on tackling issues around retention with a drop-out rate of about 40 per cent.Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, in his opening speech, while giving reasons for the conference, said the event was aimed at ensuring improved teaching skills for effective delivery of instructions for adult learners to be encouraged and retained for the period of learning.
Wahab, represented by the Permanent Secretary in his office, Mr. Kasali Adeniran, said: “Education and technology is part of the THEMES agenda of the present administration. This is aside from that in Lagos, education is given priority because we are in the 21 Century, which is a knowledge economy.”
