Health workers treating patients without gloves, masksAs Lagos confirms its index Lassa fever case, visits by PUNCH HealthWise to five major health facilities in the state reveal an alarming disregard
for standard protocols in handling new and emerging infectious diseases. Findings show healthcare personnel and facilities unwittingly exposed to possible infection and cross-infection. TESSY IGOMU, ANGELA ONWUZOO & LARA ADEJORO report
Lagos became the latest state in the country to record Lassa fever case, as the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, announced on Wednesday that the index case was an indigene of Ebonyi State who had come to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos campus, for a course. On a tour of federal and state owned hospitals in Lagos to ascertain the level of preparedness put in place by the state and federal governments to tackle infectious diseases such as the Lassa fever and Coronavirus, PUNCH HealthWise observed a total disregard for basic health guidelines among hospital staff, even as Lassa fever health advisories hang at strategic points within the health facilities.A toilet at the Federal Government-owned LUTH, Idi-Araba, on Thursday.
