The national spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP), Obiora Ifoh, dismisses rumors that Abia State Governor Alex Otti plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Ifoh asserts that Governor Otti has assured him of his continued loyalty to the LP and dismisses the defection rumors as mere speculation.

Despite rumours swirling about potential defections, the national spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) insists that Governor Alex Otti of Abia State remains committed to the party. Obiora Ifoh told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Governor Otti has assured him personally that he has no plans to join the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ifoh acknowledged that defections are common in any democracy and that the courts have repeatedly ruled on the interpretation of Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution regarding such moves. However, he emphasized that Governor Otti is not considering joining the APC. Ifoh attributed the rumours to challenges some opposition governors, particularly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are facing in controlling their states. He expressed confidence that the LP will retain Governor Otti and potentially gain more governors by 2027. Recent media reports suggested that some governors, particularly from the PDP, were leaning towards joining the APC. These reports cited the governors' body language, including private visits to President Bola Tinubu and the inauguration of projects in their states by the President. The Chairperson of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, has also been reportedly wooing opposition governors to join the APC. The LP spokesperson, however, remains optimistic about Governor Otti's commitment to the party and expressed hope for a stronger LP presence in the coming elections
