Kwara State government is investing in the revitalization of its primary healthcare system by awarding contracts worth N5 billion to upgrade 70 Primary Health Centres across the state. The upgrades, supported by the World Bank-funded IMPACT project, aim to improve access to quality healthcare services for all residents, particularly under-five children and women.
Kwara State government has awarded contracts worth N5 billion to upgrade 70 Primary Health Centres (PHC) across the state's three senatorial districts. The Executive Secretary, Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Nusirat Elelu, announced this at a contract-signing event in Ilorin. The upgrade will encompass infrastructural improvements, solarisation, staff quarters construction, potable water supply, and provision of ultra-modern hospital equipment for all benefiting PHCs.
\Elelu explained that the intervention is supported by the World Bank-funded Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Progress and Transforming Services (IMPACT) project. The project aims to enhance the capacity of PHCs to deliver quality healthcare services across the state. She emphasized that the ultimate goal is to make all PHCs 'fit for purpose' as they serve as the initial point of contact for citizens with the national health system. \The Executive Secretary encouraged the successful bidders to adhere to high-quality standards and deliver on their commitments. She also assured that contracts would be closely monitored to ensure responsible utilization of the investment. This initiative is part of the state government's wider strategy to revitalize the PHC system. Previous efforts include the renovation of 53 PHCs and the ongoing renovation of nine more. The government also recently recruited 1,005 PHC workers, including doctors, to address staffing gaps and ensure adequate human resources. \Michael Oguntoye, the IMPACT Programme Manager, highlighted that the contract must be completed within three months, with no tolerance for delays. He underscored that the PHC upgrade is one of several interventions Kwara State is receiving through the IMPACT project, which prioritizes reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality. The project primarily benefits under-five children and women, aiming to improve access to healthcare for all residents. IMPACT will also strengthen national monitoring and evaluation systems and contribute to demand generation and service quality improvement nationwide
