The Kano State Government celebrates a Court of Appeal victory that affirms its reforms of traditional institutions and overturns Federal High Court rulings. The judgment clarifies jurisdictional issues and strengthens the government’s commitment to modernization and equitable representation within traditional structures.

Kano State Government officials expressed satisfaction with a recent Court of Appeal judgment that upheld the state's reforms of traditional institutions and overturned earlier rulings by the Federal High Court concerning the Kano Emirate Council .

Speaking at a press conference on January 11, 2025, officials including the Attorney General, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Commissioner for Information, and 44 Local Government Chairmen, reaffirmed the state's commitment to justice, fairness, and the modernization of traditional institutions while preserving Kano's cultural heritage. The appellate court's ruling validated the actions of the Kano State Government on chieftaincy appointments and reforms, declaring them lawful and constitutional. The judgment also clarified jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, stating that the Federal High Court had no authority to intervene in such issues. Attorney General Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi stated that all decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court in Kano have been quashed and set aside by the Court of Appeal. He added that the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly regarding Emirates and all actions taken by the Executive Governor of Kano State, pursuant to that law, have been fully upheld and legalized by the Court of Appeal. The judgment strengthens the government’s reforms aimed at ensuring equitable representation, inclusive governance, and the empowerment of traditional institutions. The government urged individuals, public institutions, and private organizations to respect and implement the Court of Appeal’s decision. In a call for unity, the government encouraged all stakeholders to set aside differences and collaborate to promote peace and progress in the state

The appellate court determined that the case involved chieftaincy matters rather than fundamental human rights violations as claimed by the plaintiffs, who sought to challenge the reinstatement of former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. The case was initially heard by Justice Liman of the federal high court, who issued several rulings, including suspending the implementation of the 2024 law that reinstated Sanusi. However, the appeal court overturned these rulings and ordered the return of the case file to the Kano state high court for reassignment.
