The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended three Local Government chairmen for three months over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and administrative misconduct.

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended three Local Government chairmen for three months over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and administrative misconduct.

The affected officials are Alhaji Bello Abdullahi Gadanya, Dr. Alhassan Salusu and Alhaji Abubakar Mustapaha, of Bagwai, Bebeji, and Rogo LGAs respectively. The suspension followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during plenary yesterday. The Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, presented the committee’s findings on behalf of the chairman.

Dala said the investigation was initiated following petitions from the Legislative Councils of Bebeji and Rogo LGAs, as well as concerned residents of Bagwai, alleging financial impropriety, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and other administrative violations. The committee reviewed official documents, examined relevant records, and engaged members of the affected legislative councils before reaching its conclusions. In Bagwai LGA, the committee alleged that the chairman misappropriated funds allocated for development projects.

In Bebeji LGA, it cited alleged violations of due process in contract awards, improper disposal of council land, diversion of public funds, and procurement irregularities, including claims that some contractors were directed to make payments into accounts linked to the executive chairman. For Rogo LGA, the report accused the chairman of undermining government policies, failing to follow administrative procedures, and misappropriating funds meant for feeder roads and rural electrification projects.

The Assembly directed the Clerk to communicate its resolution to the Kano State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate implementation, stressing that the suspension would allow an unhindered investigation while promoting accountability in local government administration. The chairman of the taskforce, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, confirmed the exercise, saying the operation was targeted at developments that violated the state’s approved master plan. The enforcement covered major routes including Maiduguri Road, Western Bypass, Eastern Bypass, Ahmadu Bello Way, and Gwarzo Road. Among the properties sealed were Dan’agundi Shopping Plaza, block-making yards, a car park, a construction site belonging to a Chinese firm, and structures erected beneath high-tension power lines at Rimin Gata.

Dr. Sani said the taskforce was focused on illegal developments located on road setbacks, public lands, waterways, and electricity transmission corridors. He directed owners of affected properties to report to the Kano Geographic Information System headquarters on Dr. Bala Muhammad Way with documents proving their legal status.

“To clear their status and resume work, they must present their Certificates of Occupancy, land allocation papers, and approved building plans. Failure to comply will result in prosecution,” he warned. The taskforce chairman reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing physical planning laws, adding that Kano would maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards unapproved developments.
