Kano State Governor proposes to revert the name of Yusuf Maitama Sule University back to its original name, Northwest University. The move aims to enhance recognition and commemorate the contributions of a renowned Kano scholar.
The Kano State Governor , Abba Kabir Yusuf, has sent a letter to the State House of Assembly requesting an amendment to the law that established Yusuf Maitama Sule University, proposing to revert its name to its original name, Northwest University.
While reading the letter, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Jibril Isma'il Falgore, stated that the governor believes reverting to the original name will enhance the university's recognition, considering the significance embedded in the original name. Responding to journalists, the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Husaini Dala, said the House will review the law that established the university to make the necessary amendments and revert its name to its original. He added that the House will consider the historical import of the name in unifying Northwest Nigeria. Currently, the Kano State Government has agreed to change the name of Yusuf Maitama Sule to Northwest University in the college of admission located in Gwarimpa area to commemorate the contributions of the Kano scholar during his lifetime. The House stated that after amending the law, it will inform the National Universities Commission and the National Service Corps to take appropriate actions
