The Department of Justice is considering whether to open an investigation into the Ahmaud Arbery case and whether the evidence in the murder case may qualify as a hate crime, the department announced today
was released that appears to show Arbery shortly before he was killed walking into a home that is under construction.
Lee Merritt, an attorney for Arbery's family, said in a statement that the video proves Arbery was engaging in no illegal activity before he was killed; the older McMichael, a retired police detective,that he and his son pursued Arbery because they thought he had been involved in local burglaries. The new video emerges as the man who shot the original video showing the killing, William Roddie Bryan,“This video is consistent with the evidence already known to us,” Merritt, an attorney for Arbery’s familyin a statement, along with his cocounsel Benjamin Crump and L. Chris Stewart. “Ahmaud Arbery was out for a jog. He stopped by a property under construction where he engaged in no illegal activity and remained for only a brief period.
