Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has reacted to the recent clashes between the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Imo State Government, which resulted in the brutal attack on NLC National President Joe Ajaero.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo commended the efforts of the Presidency, specifically the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for swiftly taking action to implement one of the conditions set forth by the NLC and Trade Union Congress following the clashes. In a press release signed by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo called upon the NLC to consider shelving the proposed Nationwide Strike scheduled for 8th November 2023. According to the organization, the appeal is made in recognition of the redeployment of Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Barde, and to foster an environment of peace and stability in Imo State.
“We acknowledge that both Governor Hope Uzodinma and Joe Ajaero are prominent Igbo sons, and we implore them to prioritize the well-being of Imo State above all else,” the organization said. It added, “The destiny and future of Imo State lie in the hands of its people. Therefore, we urge the Imo State Government, organized labour unions , and Biafra agitators to respect the rights and freedoms of Imo citizens and residents to freely express their choices at the polls. President Tinubu must ensure the independence and impartiality of security agents and the Independent National Electoral Commission in carrying out their constitutional duties.
