Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that turning Nigeria into a one-party state would harm the nation’s democracy.Jonathan made his displeasure known while speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a memorial lecture for the late elder statesman, Edwin Clark.“Any nation that must practice it must do so carefully and with a well-planned process and projected outcome,” Jonathan said.
According to him, any attempt to bring about a one-party state through political machinations to soothe personal aspirations will be detrimental to the country.He also urged the family of the late Edwin Clark to set up an annual memorial lecture in his name, to promote his vision of a united and fair Nigeria.Also speaking at the event, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed concern about Nigeria’s current direction.
