Johns famously rescued NSW in Origin 2005, returning for Game 2 to replace Brett Kimmorley. He produced one of the greatest performances ever seen in rugby league to square the series, before the Blues won the decider for their last series win before the Queensland dynasty emerged.
Current NSW coach Brad Fittler had a similar moment in Origin, returning midway through the 2004 series at the behest of coach Phil Gould. NSW lost Game 2 to send the series to a decider, where 'Freddy' produced a masterclass in a series-winning 36-14 romp for the Blues. Queensland's most audacious comeback was undoubtedly Allan Langer in 2001, when he was plucked from Super League by Wayne Bennett to play in the decider at nearly 35. 'Alfie' scored a try as he led the Maroons to victory with a trademark performance.
The odds of Smith following suit appear long, despite Queensland's concerns. Smith played 42 Origins for 26 wins, spanning the Maroons' entire golden era and ending with a series victory in 2017.Andrew McCullough played hooker for Queensland last season but has been in sub-par form for Brisbane, while Roosters No.9 Jake Friend is currently injured.
NSW respect for Smith remains high. Former NSW captain Paul Gallen, who claimed a breakthrough series win in 2014, recently echoed Johns' sentiments by branding Smith the best player he'd seen; and totally still capable of playing for Queensland."He still could, I have no doubt. He works harder than anyone I’ve ever seen, especially on those little parts of his game."Cameron Smith will be remembered forever. He will be an Immortal, there’s no doubt about that.
