The most widely read newspaper in Nigeria
The President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mrs Toki Mabogunje, has called on the government to create jobs and support entrepreneurship to discourage irregular migration.
She made the call in Lagos at an event organised in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration. According to Mabogunje, globally, human trafficking generates an estimated $150bn in profits annually. Citing a report by the International Labour Organization, she said traffickers exploited about 25 million people annually for gain, adding that 17 per cent were trafficked for forced labour, while 80 per cent were trafficked for sexual exploitation.
She said, “Beyond identifying the dangers and ills of irregular migration in Nigeria, the chamber wishes to use this opportunity to call on the government to address the factors that drive the irregular migrants to embark on dangerous journeys in search of greener pastures.
