It occupies a huge chunk of prime real estate in the geographic centre of Darwin, which is trumpeted as the Gateway to Asia, and its air traffic control is run by the military. But why is the airport there, and can it be moved?

Looking at a map of the city of Darwin, there is one thing that strikes you immediately — the airport is smack bang in the middle of some prime CBD-adjacent real estate.

Peter Holtham, a Darwin resident of 27 years, is happy with the short airport commute — a 10- to 15-minute drive from almost any Darwin suburb. He is still amongst the many people who've been curious about its location. Batchelor is about 100 kilometres south of the city — almost an hour's drive, which would be quite the trip before and after every flight.
