It's lights, camera and action as Democrat hopefuls go live in first primaries TV debate | KnottMatthew

The prospect of taking on Donald Trump for the presidency of the United States has proved tantalising for Democratic politicians. There are vastly more candidates than usual competing for the chance to become his nemesis in the country's 2020 elections.

The potential nominees will descend on Miami in Florida for the debates on Wednesday night and the following night .In order to prevent the debate process from becoming totally unworkable, the Democratic National Committee decided that candidates must fulfil one of two criteria to take part. They must have scored at least 1 per cent in three legitimate polls or have raised donations from at least 65,000 people.

This year the DNC created a lottery to ensure candidates polling more than 2 per cent were split up over both nights. During the last election cycle, Republican candidates were placed in one of two groups: prime time for those who were performing best in the polls and off-peak timeslots for those struggling to gain significant support. The undercard events became unkindly known as the "kids' table" debates.

But most candidates are expected to play nice and focus on emphasising their strengths. There are still six months to go until the primaries begin – it can look desperate to go on the attack so early. Democratic voters are also resolutely focused on defeating Trump in 2020, meaning they have little patience for internal disunity and attacks that could damage the party's eventual nominee in the general election.
