I started a small communications consulting company called Debwe, a short form of Debwewin, one of the seven grandfather teachings that means truth. I always thought my role was to ensure there are true and accurate stories of Indigenous peoples out there.Truth and Reconciliation Commission We work with organizations in Ottawa, including CHEO, which is building a new service centre and wants to ensure Indigenous voices are included both in the design of that new building and in the services offered. We’ve been contacted to work with them to make sure things are done respectfully.

It’s not “Indigenous history.” We want to reframe Canada’s history, especially colonization, and add Indigenous voices and perspectives. Cultural awareness is really awareness. It’s not education. It’s not competency. It’s not cultural safety. It’s awareness.
